Eating

Etiquette of Eating in Islam

Be Grateful and Don't Criticise Food

"O you believe! Eat of the good things that we have provided for you and be grateful to Allah, if it is He that you worship."
Surah al-Baqarah; Ayat 17

The Prophet (peace be upon him) never criticised food. It was narrated in Sahih Muslim that he asked his family for food. When he was told that all that was available for him to eat was vinegar, he asked for it and started eating saying; "What a good food is vinegar".
Sahih Muslim (2052)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) would sometimes say; "I do not feel like eating this" rather than criticising food made for him.
Sahih Bukhari (5076) and Muslim (1946)

Sometimes he would just leave the food without saying anything if he didn't want to eat it.
Sahih Bukhari (3370) and Muslim (2064)

Eating with the Right Hand

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said; "The Shaytan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand."
Sahih Muslim (2020)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) came across a man eating with his left hand and told him to eat with his right hand. The man replied; "I cannot" to which Muhammad (peace be upon him) replied; "May you never be able to!". It was reported that the man never lifted his right hand to his mouth again.
Sahih Muslim (2021)

He used to eat with three fingers of his right hand.
